8th Grade ART
UPDATE: Mr. Gierhart's 8th grade art classes are going DIGITAL! We are now moving into a mythological beast project in which students are instructed to combine photographs found on the internet in the program Adobe Photoshop to create a beast from mythology. As a formative assessment we are going back to the coat of arms! Students are currently working on creating a coat of arms-type collage of images to practice different photoshop tools and techniques. An example of this project is the photo to the left which I created using Photoshop. The Students will be creating these coat of arms based on a person (celebrity, singer, hero, etc.). The person I chose was Odin, the father of the Norse Gods from Norse Mythology (the mythology of the Scandinavian Countries-Norway(where my family is from), Sweden, Finland, and Denamark). Stay posted for more updates, and examples of student work!
UPDATE: 8th graders just finished their Heraldry/ Family Crest project. In this project students learned about the history of heraldry as well as looked at contemporary artist Rashaad Nesome who is playing with the idea of Heraldry and Coat of Arms. Students saw examples of traditional Coat of Arms as well as examples of more contemporary versions, such as the example I made (pictured on the left). Students used quill and ink, as well as colored pencil and watercolor. Due to time constraints some students' work remains black and white. They did and awesome job. Each symbol of their Coat of Arms represents something about themselves and who they are.
Below you find a video about Rashaad Newsome, a short video about the history of heraldry, and lastly a slideshow of student work!.
